The illustrator (J ohanna the Mad) did a truly fantastic job and honestly, the stars I've given above aren't a reflection on the visuals but on the story itself. However, I did try my best to approach this with fresh eyes and an open mind, which I think I did, helped along by the fact that Fence is a graphic novel and so completely different than The Captive Prince. I tried to read The Captive Prince but truthfully, and I don't say this a lot, I couldn't stand it. One of the gang was found to be operating out of prison using a clandestine phone, even planning to bring drugs into the jail with the aid of a drone. Warwickshire Police’s Serious Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) said its successful Operation Scorecard probe took out the biggest organised crime group known to have been operating in the county. When the trailer was forced open, the weapons and associated ammunition, as well as more drugs, were discovered. The group also inadvertently gave away the hiding place to their cache of 15 firearms – after a dashcam recovered from a vehicle linked to the gang recorded them moving a lorry trailer into field, where it was then hidden behind a hedge. Much of it was found hidden in the wardrobe of a child’s bedroom or an adjacent pink suitcase, when an address connected to the group was raided. Certainly names and terminology from ancient cultures, which is a problem in a book dealing chiefly with these subjects, but even common words in modern English parlance. The major warning, which could stem from a pet peeve of mine, is that the narrator mispronounces words very frequently. The Mispronounced Teachings of All the Ages She graduated from Bristol University with a first-class honors degree in history in 2007 and went on to do a master’s degree at Oxford. Clair is a freelance journalist and author based in London. She has had a column about color in Elle Decoration since 2013 and is a former assistant books and arts editor for The Economist. She has since written about design and culture for publications including The Economist, House & Garden, Quartz, and the New Statesman. There she wrote her dissertation on women’s masquerade costumes during the eighteenth century and graduated with distinction. Across fashion and politics, art and war, the secret lives of color tell the vivid story of our culture. Clair has turned her lifelong obsession with colors and where they come from (whether Van Gogh’s chrome yellow sunflowers or punk’s fluorescent pink) into a unique study of human civilization. From blonde to ginger, the brown that changed the way battles were fought to the white that protected against the plague, Picasso’s blue period to the charcoal on the cave walls at Lascaux, acid yellow to kelly green, and from scarlet women to imperial purple, these surprising stories run like a bright thread throughout history. The Secret Lives of Color tells the unusual stories of seventy-five fascinating shades, dyes, and hues. You can expect me to be warm, enthusiastic, non-judgmental, honest, and engaged.
